A study was performed on cave Bats in Sardinia to obtain a first description of the status of these mammals in the region. A total of 80 caves in the four Sardinian provinces were examined over a three years period and 11 species of bats were identified. The most important caves are described, with particular attention to the «nursery» caves, where bats form densely-populated colonies during the summer season. It was determined that Bats make seasonal migrations, moving from summer caves used for reproduction to winter caves used for hibernation, the migration routes varying from species to species. This study prepares for a future conservation strategy for troglophilous cave Bats in Sardinia.

Abstract
A study was performed on cave Bats in Sardinia to obtain a first description of the status of these mammals in the region. A total of 80 caves in the four Sardinian provinces were examined over a three years period and 11 species of bats were identified. The most important caves are described, with particular attention to the «nursery» caves, where bats form densely-populated colonies during the summer season. It was determined that Bats make seasonal migrations, moving from summer caves used for reproduction to winter caves used for hibernation, the migration routes varying from species to species. This study prepares for a future conservation strategy for troglophilous cave Bats in Sardinia.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
