The principal characters of drought in northern Sardinia are described in relation to variability of precipitations during the period 1951-2000, using the frequency and the duration of day sequences with a p<1mm and with a p<10mm. Such parameters have been calculated for the whole year, for the «dry season» (from may to september) and for the «rainy season» (from october to april). The variability of rain, illustrated by the SPI index (Standardized Precipitation Index), presents a negative trend statistically significant (p<0,05), with a reduction of yearly precipitations and of the «rainy season». As far as the events with a p<1mm are concerned, the frequencies show positive and significant trends during the year (r=0,394) and in the «dry season» (r=0,314), the duration present negative trends always at a year scale (r=-0,307) and in the «dry season» (r=-0,329). The correlations between the values of the SPI index and the number and length of the dry spell put into evidence the close relation between the decrease of precipitations from one side, the increase of the number of sequences with a p<1 mm of the «rainy» period (r=-0,433), the reduction of the frequencies (r=0,480) and the extension of periods with a p<10mm during the whole year (r=-0,732) from the other side.
