Abstract

Council of Europe’s Code of Conducts for preventing and mitigating impact of invasive alien plants - A very large number of invasive alien species is introduced every year in Europe and in Italy through a plethora of pathways and by diverse vectors. The Council of Europe’s Code of Conducts aims to prevent the introduction and to mitigate the negative impacts of invasive alien plants. They are non-binding self-regulatory tools that should be applied in three well documented major pathways of alien plant introductions, i.e. in the horticultural sector, for Botanic Gardens and in Plantation Forestry. Codes of conducts can also help overcoming major gaps and inconsistencies in the international regulatory frameworks both at global and regional levels and provide a support for raising public awareness and for education purposes.
