This essay reinterprets Hobbes’ Leviathan as a technical object, drawing on the thought of Simondon and Stiegler. It argues that theHobbesian State is not merely artificial but functions as a medium that shapes the relationship between the individual and society. The Leviathan incorporates its genesis, operates as an indeterminate machine, andis grounded in a dual mediality: juridical and economic. The analysis shows how law and money jointly structure political subjectivity, suggesting that the ‘illness’ of the State lies in the tension between its juridical anatomy and economic physiology.

Abstract

This essay reinterprets Hobbes’ Leviathan as a technical object, drawing on the thought of Simondon and Stiegler. It argues that theHobbesian State is not merely artificial but functions as a medium that shapes the relationship between the individual and society. The Leviathan incorporates its genesis, operates as an indeterminate machine, andis grounded in a dual mediality: juridical and economic. The analysis shows how law and money jointly structure political subjectivity, suggesting that the ‘illness’ of the State lies in the tension between its juridical anatomy and economic physiology.
