This introduction maps women's contributions to experimental cinema, video art, and new media from a historical and theoretical perspective. Drawing on Feminist Film Theory, the editors argue that experimental and independent audiovisual practices have constituted a privileged laboratory for women to explore new forms of subjectivity and self-representation, outside the economic and censorial constraints of mainstream cinema. Rather than imposing a unified narrative, the issue embraces the diversity and multiplicity of women's experimental work, tracing constellations of shared concerns — the body as language, memory, authorship, and community — across a wide international range of artists and scholars.

Abstract
This introduction maps women's contributions to experimental cinema, video art, and new media from a historical and theoretical perspective. Drawing on Feminist Film Theory, the editors argue that experimental and independent audiovisual practices have constituted a privileged laboratory for women to explore new forms of subjectivity and self-representation, outside the economic and censorial constraints of mainstream cinema. Rather than imposing a unified narrative, the issue embraces the diversity and multiplicity of women's experimental work, tracing constellations of shared concerns — the body as language, memory, authorship, and community — across a wide international range of artists and scholars.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
