Da uso privato a uso pubblico: processi di monumentalizzazione in contesti a rischio idrogeologico. Alcuni esempi dal mondo romano

The construction of public buildings most often coincided with a period of significant urban growth. This coincided with an increase of wealth of the ruling class, which frequently resulted in substantial acts of euergetism. However, the transformation of city spaces from private to public use in certain instances was also related to the necessity to redevelop, restore, and stabilise risky terrains. For the purposes of this study, this statement should be interpreted specifically in the framework of water-related challenges, including issues of runoff, swamping, marshy and stagnant waters, and soils susceptible to flooding. The case studies presented here offer insight into the various factors influencing the topographical placement of public works within cities.
