In the autumn of 1944, a portion of Italian territory north of Novara was liberated from German troops. An independent zone was established, which subsequently became known as the Ossola Republic. It was a short-lived experience that lasted only a few weeks but became emblematic of the values that would inspire the rebirth of Italian democratic life. The article reconstructs the work of the Commissione Didattica Consultiva, which was tasked with removing all traces of fascist propaganda from schools in the zone, introducing new curricula and forging the democratic governance of schools. The text highlights the cultural debt that the reformers owed to the Risorgimento tradition and Italian humanist culture as well as the firm resistance of intellectuals who opposed the political conceptions of Nazi-Fascist ideology and violence.

Abstract
