This contribution aims to a broad look at the theme of closed contexts of the sixteenth century in the Western Mediterranean and identifies the need to intensify research on both closed underwater contexts (shipwrecks) and those of settlement excavations. Recent research has clarified the importance of a well-focused archival research strategy, which allows us to accurately date the wrecks and the archaeological and ceramic contexts found in them. On a large chronological and geographical scale, this perspective gives a marked improvement to the accuracy of the dating of closed contexts, in particular pottery, underwater, but also those of the archeology of the settlements.

Abstract

Descrizione: Questo contributo rivolge uno sguardo ampio al tema dei contesti chiusi del xvi secolo nel Mediterraneo Occidentale e identifica la necessità di intensificare le ricerche sia sui contesti chiusi subacquei (i relitti navali), sia su quelli degli scavi di insediamenti. Le ricerche recenti hanno chiarito l’importanza di una ben focalizzata strategia di ricerca archivistica, che permetta di datare con precisione i relitti e i contesti archeologici e ceramici in essi rinvenuti. Su larga scala cronologica e geografica, questa prospettiva imprime un netto miglioramento alla precisione delle datazioni dei contesti chiusi, in particolare ceramici, subacquei, ma anche di quelli dell’archeologia degli insediamenti.
