This article aims at investigating the narrative potential of the female expressionless across painting, cinema, literature and photography. A specific iconography will be retraced: the representation of a female subject characterized by an expressionless gaze. Usually accompanied by a repetitive gesture, the expressionless gaze becomes the very core of the representation, thus conveying narrative and emotional components. In light of this, the iconography of female expressionless will be defined as a Pathosformel. The article will provide an overview of the representation of female expressionless between two different paradigms: the first is a pictorial one, and it established in Impressionist and Post-impressionist paintings; the second is a more cinematic one, and it will be the major focus of the article. The narrative use of cinematic frames will be related to the representation of female expressionless in non-cinematic media, such as painting, literature and photography. The analysis will focus on three case studies: Edward Hopper’s works of art, the novel Tra donne sole by Cesare Pavese, and the photographic series Untitled Film Stills by Cindy Sherman.

Abstract
The analysis will focus on three case studies: Edward Hopper’s works of art, the novel Tra donne sole by Cesare Pavese, and the photographic series Untitled Film Stills by Cindy Sherman.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
