Our interest here will be to focus on a fundamental feature of the behavior of Spanish ESTAR + GERUND structure, which, however, seems to have gone unnoticed in grammar descriptions up to now. This grammatical operator, when conjugated in present tense, often refers to actions which have already taken place, which strongly calls into question its categorization as a progressive periphrasis.
