In all genotypes, in sprinkler irrigation, a lengthening of the sowing-heading interval was noted in comparison with flooded irrigation. The difference was even more marked between the two irrigation methods with reference to the sub-phase milky - ripening maturity; in fact this sub-phase lasted on average 8 days less in sprinkler vs flooding irrigation. The weight of 1000 kernels, was always lower, on average 3.5 g, in the springler irrigation compared with flooding. This character resulted as being influenced both by a shorter period of accumulation of photosynthetates and by the density of the panicles per surface unit, on average double in the springkler irrigation compared to flooding.Such as the saving of water and energy, the possibility of introducing rice into wider crop rotation systems, the extension of rice cultivation into areas unsuitable for flooding, the reduction of production costs and the lesser environmental impact, the concrete possibility of the use of this irrigation method can be foreseen in substitution of flooding.

Abstract

Experiments regarding aspects of cultivation techniques and behaviour of several genotypes of rice (Oryza sativaL.) grown under sprinkler and flooding irrigation were carried out in Sardinia in 1982 and 1987. Considerable differences were found between the genotypes as far as the production with sprinkler and flooding irrigation were concerned; the best results with sprinkler irrigation were obtained with the cv "Cripto", "Elio", "Argo", "Balilla", "Koral", "Ariete" and "ISC 403/99" with productions of between 6.0 and 7.0 t ha-1; for what flooding irrigation is concerned, the best varieties appeared to be the cv.
