What does it really mean to study the law? Who are law students and what do they do? This paper is aimed at answering to these questions starting from Levinsas essay on the Torah study and on the students’ role in the Jewish cultural tradition and Jewish educational practices. By comparing Levinas’ work with Kafka and Benjamin’s works, this paper will define the study of law as conversion (Umkehr) – that is also a reversal – of the law itself, a practice which separates law from its violence.

Abstract
What does it really mean to study the law? Who are law students and what do they do? This paper is aimed at answering to these questions starting from Levinsas essay on the Torah study and on the students’ role in the Jewish cultural tradition and Jewish educational practices. By comparing Levinas’ work with Kafka and Benjamin’s works, this paper will define the study of law as conversion (Umkehr) – that is also a reversal – of the law itself, a practice which separates law from its violence.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
