In this paper we analyse direct speech in two of the most important daily Italian newspapers : Corriere della Sera and Repubblica. We propose a typographical approach rather than a typological description of reported speech. We will firstly focus on typographical features of direct speech as described in italian grammar books. Secondly, we will point out certain discrepancies between traditional grammar and journalistic practices.
