The handicraft production of Italian protohistory reveals engraved signs that do not seem attributable to decorative patterns and have been interpreted as identification marks. Sardinia, where different types of graphic signs on various supports are attested, appears to be very rich in records, although these have not been systematically examined to date. In addition to the rather enigmatic vertical linear signs engraved on stone blocks set into the masonry of nuraghi and the tombs of giants, there are others that seem to be related to a codified system common to a wider Mediterranean geographical area. Generally, these are signs engraved on ceramic or metal objects, frequently isolated and therefore apparently used as markings, except for exceptional examples in which the association of several graphemes is documented. The closest point of reference would seem to be the Aegean, and the Cypro- Minoan repertoire in particular.
