Giuseppe Toaldo elaborated and published in 1787 one of the first examples of life tables in Italy. Therefore, these tables can be considered at the origin of the Italian demography. In this article, the scientific personality of the Paduan scholar is described, focusing on the construction of his life tables, from the data collection to the publication. Furthermore, the importance of these tables for contemporary scholars is underlined.
