The Othevien’s cycle includes four texts in prose and verse. The plot relates to the saga of the Roman emperor, Othevien, who banished his family during the course of events. The consequence of this action is the family’s separation and the development of individual undertakings of its members. In spite of the title of the octosyllabic version, the main character of the story is one of the emperor’s children, Florent, who has been brought up by a rich, Parisian bourgeois, named Climent. The clash between the noble origins of the young boy and the new, inconvenient reality where he lives generate a series of humiliating misadventures that comes to an end only when the hero becomes able to demonstrate his prowess by defeating the fearsome King of the Giants. My contribution is focussed on the evolution of Florent’s character and on the deep roots of his maladjustment into the villain’s society.
