The “self-destruction of Jews” · The purpose of the paper is to analyse one of the most controversial passages in Heidegger’s Black Notebooks, one that can be interpreted in many different ways. Heidegger, in 1942, wrote about the “self-destruction” of “what is essentially Jewish”. The paper attempts to clarify the meaning of “self-destruction” (Selbstvernichtung) in Heidegger’s philosophy, showing that Heidegger’s position does not provide a justification for the Holocaust.
