The study focuses on the relationship between the presence of resources and service quality and the opportunity to increase the competitive profile of a territory. The research identifies authentic tourism, of high quality, that lives in harmony with nature, the trend of national and international tourist demand and develops and applies a model of analysis of the competitiveness of the destination based on the allocation of environmental and cultural resources of the territory and in addition analyses the services that enhance, promote and communicate these elements. Following the guidelines of the environmental quality and the authentic cultural heritage, Italy is placed in the international context to perform a study on the resources of the Italian regions. To this end a set of twelve specially designed geo-statistical indicators are prepared and applied. The analysis model includes indicators referring to the quality of the water and air, the ground and the areas under protection; the artistic heritage and know-how are also considered - the quality of craftsmanship and agro-food. The estimate of the use of quality resources and the strategies implemented by the administrations to treat and communicate them close the analysis. The analysis gives specific performance indexes that, graphically represented through colour gradient maps, allows the comparison of the twenty Italian regions. The study concludes with a focus on Sardinia.
