The potential evapotranspiration (ETP) for a typical Mediterranean environment was calculated in two important agricultural plains in Sardinia. Thornthwaite's empirical formula and FAO recommended formulas were used. The results obtained were compared with experimental ones obtained using a Class A evaporimeter. The calculations which were carried out monthly over a period of 23 years, from 1961 to 1983, gave different results. The figures obtained using Thornthwaite's method were lower than those obtained using the other methods. The Blaney-Criddle-FAO method proved to be the most suitable for the estima¬tion of ETP in Mediterranean environments. The variations in ETP throughout the year and from year to year were also analysed.

Abstract
