The potential evapotranspiration (ETP) for an environment characterised by tropical climate was calculated. Thornthwaite’s formula and FAO recommended formulas were used; the results obtained were compared with those previously obtained in the Mediterranean environment. The monthly and yearly calculations gave different results for the two climatic areas: in the tropical environment Thornthwaite’s method gave intermediate values in comparison to those obtained by FAO’s methods; whereas in the Mediterranean environment the same formula strongly underestimated ETP. The variations in ETP throughout the year were also analysed.
