The potential evapotranspiration (ETP) for an environment characterised by tropical climate was calculated. Thornthwaite’s formula and FAO recommended formulas were used; the results obtained were compared with those previously obtained in the Mediterranean environment. The monthly and yearly calculations gave different results for the two climatic areas: in the tropical environment Thornthwaite’s method gave intermediate values in comparison to those obtained by FAO’s methods; whereas in the Mediterranean environment the same formula strongly underestimated ETP. The variations in ETP throughout the year were also analysed.

Abstract

L’évapotranspiration potentielle d’un milieu au climat tropical à saison sèche a été calculée au moyen des formules de Thornthwaite et de celles proposées par la FAO; les résultats ont été confrontés avec ceux obtenus précédemment en milieu méditerranéen. Les calculs effectués à échelle mensuelle et annuelle donnent des résultats différents selon les deux climats: par exemple, en milieu tropical l’ETP selon la méthode de Thornthwaite présente des valeurs annuelles d’environ 1600 mm, qui sont intermédiaires par rapport à celles de Penman et de Blaney-Criddle, tandis qu’en milieu méditerranéen la formule de Thornthwaite minimise fortement l’ETP. On a analysé aussi le régime de l’ETP au cours de l’année.
