This report covers the results of mycological studies carried out from 1983 to 1987 on 253 patients with dermatophytoses at the Department of Dermatology of the University of Sassari. The fungus isolated most frequently was M. canis (57.5% of the cases), followed by Epidermophyton floccosum (15.6%), T.rubrum (10.67%) and T. Verrucosum (6.32%). T. mentagrophytes and M. audouini were isolated in 3.16% and 2.37 of the cases, respectively. The data from these studies are then compared with observations made in that department at the beginning of the century. Currently, the incidence of infections from zoophilic dermatophytes is higher than that from anthrophilic dermatophytes.
