This study examines the impact of human capital formation and accumulation on renewable energy consumption and generation. Dynamic panel data over an extended time (2004–2018) within a meso-level setting (i.e. Italian regions) were used. The role of real income per capita as a standard economic indicator and new illegal buildings as a novel control were considered. The results suggest that human capital formation and accumulation positively influence energy consumption and generation, respectively. Renewable energy planning and implementation should account for socioeconomic and environmental features. These findings highlight implications for policymakers regarding infrastructure implementation and overall capacity issues.
