The aim of this research is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Thunderbeat™ harmonic scalpel in the ovariectomy of dogs and cats, with a particular reference to surgical time and hemostasis, also evaluating the repeatability of the procedure, especially considering the intraspecific differences of the animals. This procedure was finally compared with the classic one. A number of 200 bitches and 200 cats were included in the study. 50% of these were ovariectomized using the classic method of double ligation with suture thread (Group A), while the others were ovariectomized by Thunderbeat™ Open Extended Jaw scalpel (Group B). Thunderbeat™ provides a time of intervention faster than the classical method during ovariectomy of bitches and cats. In addition, the degree of hemostasis is not influenced by the amount of adipose tissue on the pedicle, confirming the excellent effectiveness of this device. Furthermore, the lack of correlation between intervention time and hemostasis with age, BCS or weight, underlines the repeatability of this performance in prepubescent or elderly, obese or cachectic subjects.
