Abstract

In recent years, the increasing alarm about antimicrobial resistance has intensified interest in finding viable alternatives. The pig sector is responsible for consuming a large quantity of antimicrobial, most of which are used in the weaned piglets. This thesis aimed to evaluate the effects of the dietary inclusion of three levels of extract of olive oil wastewater in weaned pigs. This work is organized into a general introduction, three chapters of experimental contribution and general conclusions. Chapter 1 reports the literature on problems associated with the weaned piglets. The first experimental contribution (chapter 2) extends the knowledge on the in-vitro and in-vivo effects of substances contained in olive oil wastewater and assess the effects on palatability and growth performance of weaned piglets. Chapter 3 reports the effects of olive oil wastewater on growth performance and fecal microbiota during the weaning transition. The chapter 4, tests the potential and effectiveness of olive oil wastewater on reducing the severity or even preventing post-weaning diarrhea, using a well-established in vivo ETEC challenge model. Finally, the general conclusion about results
