This research aims to bring out the complementary connection between translation and reception of the Virgilian Bucoliche in the eighteenth century. The particular purpose of this study is also standing out among three of the many eighteenth translators of this work. The research reports to the results of the survey, which may be reduced as follows: • reconstruction of the eighteenth debate about the method of translation, or rather about the choice of a literal translation for a free fruition of the text. • reconnaissance of the fortune of Bucoliche in the eighteenth century Italian literature; • research about the translation activity of Antonio Conti and his analysis of his translation about the Sixth ecloga, showing a versatility of translation choices; • examination of Buccolica di Virgilio tradotta in versi italiani da Clemente Bondi and commentary of critical reflections about the activity of translation expressed by the author. In a Nota al testo are indicated the variants emerged from the collation of the volume published in 1811 and the Buccolica published in 1809. • analysis of the Bucolica di Virgilio volgarizzata da Focisto Sideate, which does not seem known at present and, for the first time, it is offered to the reading of professionals. From this translation rises the dual choice of a version relatively free for a part, and forthe other it results more faithful to the Latin text of the beginning.
