The present work is an essay in commentary on the sixteenth book of Res gestae ofAmmianus Marcellinus. This commentary was written from a primarly philological and literary perspective. We have tried in particular to highlight and explain the Ammianus’ choice of words and syntax, and some peculiarities of his style. The vocabulary has a dense pregnancy: not infrequently, beyond a superficial reading, you can find at second level nuances of the text in which Ammianus seems have placed his real thoughts. Still, the sections specifically ‘julianic’ stand out for the high stylistic register. Much attention has been dedicated to facies ‘sound’ of the text, particularly to the sound figures and to the clauses.
