Massimo Achilli Biographies from the countryside: processes of political and social achievements of a community in the Republic of Siena in the 14th century Appendix: the register of documents of ser Griffo di ser Paolo This research intends to reconstruct the economic, political and social background of Montalcino in the 14th century, a period in which the conditions for the definition of its relationships with Siena were determined. The starting point was a deep biographical study of the role played by the maker of the agreement with the dominant municipality (of Siena), the notary ser Griffo di ser Paolo who, as representative of Montalcino’s municipality, will define the terms of the submission-filiation with the Sienese authorities. After this the biographies of its relatives were defined. The relatives turned out to constitute a real group of power within the town and local charitable institutions. A particular attention was also given to ser Griffo’s customers, focusing on the Sienese family of the Tolomeis, the Montalcinese Jewish community and economic policy of the Val d’Orcia municipality (customer of the notary). The sources used are in the town Archives of Montalcino and State Archives of Siena. In the former, the notarial register of documents of ser Griffo di ser Paolo and one of his memorials are analysed, while in the latter the Diplomatic Records of Montalcino, the registers of Gabella and those of the Restis’ Patrimony are analysed.
