The conservation of biological diversity of the “climax” forests is a very timely topic that needs to be deepened. The formations in Yew (Taxus baccata L.) and Holly (Ilex aquifolium L.) in Sardinia are patches of primary forest, some of the most ancestral and of high scientific interest. Their importance is also proved by the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC (they fall into the code 94). The CORINE Biotopes legend (42.A7 - Woods with Yew) define specifically the two species as Sardinian Yew woods (42.A.73). In this work we attempt to define the real texture and distribution of Yew and Holly throughout the regional forest ecosystems by the cartographic map in GIS and the ecological analysis-management of the two species habitats. Therefore, by using research and study of the literature, the Geocoding of bibliographic records, field surveys and the monitoring of areas where the two species are found, the knowledge on the two species under study has been expanded. The results shown and provided important information, and updates, on the Yew and Holly Sardinian distribution and their relationship with the geopedological, climatic and anthropogenic characters. Moreover, we can better define their areal, distribution and ecology. From the obtained results have been elaborated the proposals of forest management with the attention for their protection and for anthropic respect.
