The aim of this research is to examine the Statute of Todi, written in 1337 and preserved in the Local Historical Archive of the same city. It is inserted into a composite code, that basically includes different manuscripts, characterized by the same signature and binding as well.The parchments, that concerns the Statute, occupy 216 c., which are also arranged in fivedistinctiones. In addition to these parchments, there is a group of numbered documents until c. 341; these are copies of resolutions and reforms about various subjects, such as therenovatio statutorum, which were promoted by different city councils. Thecomplectio statutiis the last document of the Statute, it dates back to December, the 6th,1337,tempore Legerii capitaney civitatis Tuderti. The main step of this scientific operation is the analysis of the Statute, by considering the peculiarities of the language and following a critical-interpretative approach, applied with absolute rigour in order to arrive at a precise transcription of the manuscript. In addition to analyzing the prescriptive text, this research aims to elaborate a strict reconstruction of the historical context of thecivitastudertina. In fact, it shows a detailed analysis of the origin and the evolution of institutions of the medieval communes, trying to illustrate the deep renewal, that they have introduced in society by the end of the 12thto the second half of the 14thcentury.
