BACKGROUND:The treatment of cartilage’s damage represents a problem of considerable practical interest in human and veterinary medicine. Over the years many surgical techniques have been proposed with the aim of inducing the growth of repairing tissue and limiting degeneration. Indeed, the articular cartilage’s lesions do not heal spontaneously or heal only partially in certain conditions.PURPOSE:Compare the results of different experimental protocols in sheep animal model, in the healing of chondral lesions and ultrastructural regeneration.METHODS:we have carried out experimental lesions in 45 sheep. The animals were shared into 4 groups, based on for different treatments: group A (embryonic stem cells), group B (microfracture + PRP), group C (microfracture + ACP), group D (Nanoceria).RESULTS:In group A we did not detect statistically significant differences between treatment groups, although the defects treated with ES showed a trend towards better healing process. In group B and group C treated subjects showed significantly better scores than their controls. For the group D are available only macroscopic data, which reveal an attempt to regenerate cartilage injuries.DISCUSSION:all treatments we used promote, at various levels, a tissue reparative response that can be hypothesized as a possible clinical application. However, in no one of the controls case at 12 months, was produced hyaline cartilage. Further studies are necessary to verify the results in long term.
