In our paper functional prominence effects in large-scale spatial cognition are explored within the framework of anchor point theory. In particular, we analyze functional dependencies: (a) between focal and reference objects; (b) generated by cognitive anchors (and home base as a primary anchor in particular). Several large-scale surveys in youth (n=1807) were conducted applying a spatial preposition task (implementing frameworks by Talmy (1983), and Landau & Jackendoff (1993)). According to our results we can confirm our main hypothesis that home base is the strongest principle of functional dependency in urban environment. First, we found that 48% of youth uses at least one construction with cognitive anchor ‘home’ in at least one of 23 questions included in preposition task. Second, our results also indicate that cognitive anchor ‘home’ is strongly involved in generation of search domains (functional scopes of spatial areas denoted by a spatial preposition): The further respondent lives from city center the larger is the scope of her search domain (Pearson’s r = 0,354, p<0.01, 2-tailed). Based on these results we draw further conclusions about the generation of scopes of search domains. We also make some generalizations assuming that home base encodes a strong asymmetric figure-ground relationship and as a cognitive anchor is more prominent than other places and paths.
