Abstract

Owing to the spreading of many regional techniqus about the elaboration, management and diffusion of both detailed and large area Planning, the using of geographical information technologies seems to be more and more a “must” than a real operative need. The spread use of G.I.S. surely has caused a massive diffusion of cartographic culture and also an extraordinary gathering of Geographical DB, but has not increased the knowledge of the spatial analyses as an help to land planning. In a few words, it is possible to see the use of these methods only to overlay of raster/vector informatons, both geometric and descriptive, of very variable quality. In these applications the spatial multi-range overlays - where metadata and also the positional coherence has been lost - seem to be very insidious. In the paper these topics are faced with different studies and examples from the point of view of the not-specialist user. Among the examples there are different law applications in which the wrong reading of the geographically determined data is the origin of trespassings, occupation of private and public areas, and of fanciful explanations about the punctual, linear and areal symbology in printed or digital cartography.
