Medaglia d'Argento quale migliore opera del 2008 da parte di OPTIMA (Organitation for the Phyto-Taxonomic Investigation in the Mediterranean Area. XIII Meeting, Antalya, Turchia - 22-26 MARCH 2010. Sardinia, the second Mediterranean Island in extension, includes wide areas where a high number of endemics occurs and large areas where well conserved and peculiar aspects of semi-natural and natural vegetation are still frequent. The book written by Ignazio Camarda and Franca Valsecchi focuses on the analysis of woody plants, mainly as far as their systematic, phytogeographic, biological and ecological features are concerned. Within the families each species is treated in a wide context, and in its description the complete range of intraspecific biodiversity provided. Furthermore through the relevant synonyms, together with taxonomical and systematic notes relationships among Sardinian and related taxa in the Mediterranean region are delimited. In particular, the treatment of the genera Quercus, Genista, Salix is so detailed that it represents a very important reference for the whole Mediterranean area. Besides ecology, the authors have provided the distribution map of the species in the whole region together with useful sylvicultural notes. They have also pointed out how the great heritage of the monumental trees and the forests play a structural role and characterize the whole regional landscape. A special chapter is devoted to ethnobotanical studies. For each species the rich popular lexicon and uses that reveal unexpected analogies and relationships with other countries are analyzed and the characters of the original pan-Mediterranean culture are marked. In the volume an excellent iconography is provided for each species, with drawings by the authors themselves. Finally, a large numbers of photographs represents a very useful aid for the amateurs.
