The study links plantation and growing conditions of Douglas fir stands in Tuscany with wood quality relevant characteristics. 32 Douglas fir stems have been analysed uniformly sampling the range of plantation densities (from below 1000 to over 3000) and thinning intensity levels. The paper presents models estimating stem profiles and the distribution of branches diameters as functions of plantation density, a local basal area measure and SANGP competition index. Effects of silviculture on stem shape is limited, compared to the effect on stem sizes. Effects on branches dimensions is marked: values can be doubled.

Abstract

The study links plantation and growing conditions of Douglas fir stands in Tuscany with wood quality relevant characteristics. 32 Douglas fir stems have been analysed uniformly sampling the range of plantation densities (from below 1000 to over 3000) and thinning intensity levels. The paper presents models estimating stem profiles and the distribution of branches diameters as functions of plantation density, a local basal area measure and SANGP competition index. Effects of silviculture on stem shape is limited, compared to the effect on stem sizes. Effects on branches dimensions is marked: values can be doubled.
