The present study was designed 1. to test potential cytotoxicity of essential oil and aqueous extract prepared from leaves of wild PLL plants growing in North Sardinia on human oral cell lines 2. to find out more details about biological activity of PLL extracts. The cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory activity of not only the pure essential oil of Pistacia lentiscus leaves but also of the lecithin nanoemulsion with P. lentiscus oil, and wa- ter extract of P. lentiscus leaves were tested on three hu- man oral cell lines (HPLF, HGnF, and DOK). • The viability of cells was the most diminished by lecithin nanoemulsion, pure essential oil had the lowest effect on the viability - PLL EO was not toxic up to the concentra- tion of 200 μg/mL medium • PLL extracts showed the capacity to inhibit both COX-1 and COX-2, the highest activity against COXs was ob- served with the PLL water extract - at concentration 10 μg/ mL the inhibition of COX-1 was similar to ibuprofen The content of the Pistacia lentiscus essential oil in oral health products could have some benefits for users as it is not cytotoxic for oral cells and shows an an- ti-inflammatory activity.
