Abstract

Cucurbitaceous crops are highly susceptible to nematode attacks, and under the existing open field and protected cultivation technology, these crops are liable for significant losses that may achieve 10%–25%. Along with other pests, a major role is played by diverse nematode species, including the root-knot nematode, lesion nematode, reniform nematode, and some ectoparasitic species. Among these Meloidogyne species viz, M. incognita and M. javanica are highly prevalent in cucurbit fields causing substantial damage to these crops in both open fields as well as polyhouses. Similarly, other nematodes also commonly infest cucurbits. In view of the short duration of the crop, integration of non-chemical methods such as organic manures or green manuring and biopesticides coupled with the use of disinfested nursery or resistant/tolerant variety, if available, may greatly minimize the yield loss inflicted by nematodes to cucurbit crops.
