The Roman settlement of Peltuinum extends in the municipalities of Prata d’Ansidonia and San Pio delle Camere (province of L’Aquila, Abruzzo). Peltuinum was founded in the mid-first century BC on a lime plateau – crossed by a sheep track running east-west – rising amid a basin originally occupied by a lake, which dried up naturally at a later stage. Excavation carried out since the 1980s brought to light a number of buildings, most of which have been interpreted as dwellings installed along the via Claudia Nova, which corresponds more or less with the route of the sheep track. Some of the buildings yielded floor mosaics, with patterns widely used during the first century BC and the first century AD, both in the area and in Italy. Lower-ranking structures featured simpler, beaten-earth floorings. Both structures and floor mosaics offer further evidence for the process of urban definition of the settlement, which is primarily known for the more monumental remains of the theatre and of the adjacent temple.
