Investigation of the cemeteries of Monte Sirai has greatly helped to reassess our understanding of the Phoenician and Carthaginian presence in southwestern Sardinia, especially with regard to the late Archaic and early Punic phases. It has usually been emphasized that the settlement of Monte Sirai was almost totally destroyed after the Carthaginian conquest, but new burial evidence instead clearly demonstrates continuity throughout the Punic period. Infant burials and tombs of adults of both sexes allow us to identify patterns and features of the human population at Monte Sirai at the time of Carthaginian expansion over the western Mediterranean.
