This contribution provides a reasoned synthesis of data on the distribution of slavery in Sardinia during the Roman Age, through a collation of literary, legal, archaeological and epigraphical sources; public, private and imperial slaves and freedmen, living in the provincia Sardinia, in particular in the ancient urban areas, seemed to play a vital and widely diversified role in the economic, domestic, religious contexts, within the artistic and cultural excitement of the towns. Data on slavery and serfdom forms collected in medieval literary sources (Condaghes) show transformations, ‘continuity’, Roman ‘heritages’ in Byzantine and early medieval Sardinia.
