In this study we suggest the evaluation of dryness intensity through the definition and comparison of indexes directly connected to the concept of dryness according to Bagnouls and Gaussen, starting from the examination of 35 stations of the central - western basin of the Mediterranean. The methodology is applied to different geographical domains, both on the basis of average conditions and according to the variations during the period 1951-89, in order to define the field of spatial and temporal variability of the phenomena.
