In this book chapter, a multiple V model is applied to analyze and benchmark the performances of an institutional information system with respect to the adoption of the big data paradigm in environmental management and planning. We look at a specific case study, that of the Regional Environmental Information System (REIS) of Sardinia (Italy), which is publicly managed and includes large data sets arranged into a series of “thematic modules” interlinked by means of an overarching cross-thematic analysis and reporting tool. We focus on the perspectives of the REIS with respect to inter/multi-operability, spatial and temporal retrieval distribution, and flexibility.
