In this paper, the problems connected to the effective width evaluation for serviceability or ultimate analysis of a steel-concrete composite beam are presented. By a parametric study carried out through the Abaqus code it is pointed out how actual codes are in general not appropriate for elastic and ultimate limit state verifications. The most important parameters for a correct evaluation of the effective width are introduced. Some preliminary criteria for an adequate design are moreover presented.
