The object of the present study consists in calculating and optimizing the performance of a vertical axis wind turbine equipped with straight blades changing their pitch in a cyclic way. This type of machine, also known as "giromill", has been proposed many years ago but, like other vertical axis configurations, did not find a great development so far. Yet the variable pitch allows to improve significantly the performance of the basic Darrieus turbine at the price of a relatively low complication of the machine. The performance evaluation with a simplified method, which ensures reduced computational times, allowed to consider several variation laws of the pitch angle. The objectives were the increase the peak performance, the extension of the operating range, checking the chances of obtaining the self starting operation. The adopted computational code has been developed and tuned by the authors, starting from the free wake vortex model. The reliability and the accuracy of such a code had been previously tested for different configurations of Darrieus turbines so that the present application has to be held as significant even without experimental comparisons. The results of several calculations are discussed and framed in the more general context of improving the performance of vertical axis wind turbines.
