Coenurosis is a neuropathy caused by the cystic larval form of the tapeworm Multiceps multiceps on sheep between the age of 8 and 18 months, less frequently bovines and goats, rarely other species and occasionally humans. The only effective therapy is surgery. We report the surgical technique used for the extraction of the cyst in 1995-2005 on 314 Sardinian sheep. Under general anesthesia an U-shaped incision is made on the skull corresponding to the cyst site and the dura is cross-cut with a scalpel. The cyst may sometimes be partially visible on the surface, whereas in most cases, it is localized in the intra-mural tract of the brain. In order to lighten cerebral endocranial tension from cystic pressure, part of the cystic liquid is drained with a thin needle mounted on a syringe. Removal is then carried out by exerting delicate rotating tractions. Success is more easily achieved if the intervention is carried out in the third phase of the pathology, i.e., when the cyst has reached a certain stage of development in which the symptoms are marked enough to aid clinical diagnosis of the exact site.
