Aim of this study was to compare two different anaesthetic combinations in healthy Red-Eared Slider Turtles. Twenty-four patients were randomly divided in two groups: TZBM, receiving tiletamine-zolazepam (10mg/kg) butorphanol (0,6mg/kg), medetomidine (0,2mg/kg); KBM, receiving ketamine (10mg/kg), butorphanol (0,6mg/kg) and medetomidine (0,2mg/kg). First signs and maximum level of sedation were timed. Heart rate (Hr), respiratory rate (Rr), temperature (T°) and depth of anaesthesia were recorded. After 60 minutes atipamezole (1mg/kg) was given and time recovery recorded. Quality of immobilization and behaviour were assessed during the procedure1. Statistical analysis included paired and unpaired t-tests, ANOVA and Kruskal–Wallis test. First signs and maximum level of sedation, were achieved respectively at 5± 1, 9±3 and 22,50±5 minutes in TDZM, at 6,50±1, 10±3 and 21±2,12 minutes in KZM. All patients showed apnea after protocol administration. After 60 minutes heart-rate decreased in both groups from 37bpm (Mean 10’ after induction), to 21bpm (p<0,05). Rectal temperature decreased of 1,1±0,1ºC, from initial 25ºC. Corneal, vent and pinch reflexes were maintained for all procedure. After atipamezole administration, spontaneous ventilation was achieved at 6±5,66 minutes in TZDM, followed by incoordination and ataxia in all subjects except one, while in KZM at 4±2,12 minutes (p<0,05). Three patients showed signs of incoordination. With KBM protocol all subjects were alert after 120 minutes, subjects in TZDM group appeared deeply sedated even at 480 minutes (p<0,05) Both protocols provide effective and safe chemical immobilization of patients. TZDM protocol is associated with incoordination, ataxia and prolonged recovery. Additional analgesia for surgery may be required.
