Overview on the Italian apiculture in the recent sanitary scenario In Italy, as in the rest of Europe, statistics on apiculture are historically very uncertain. Available data on colony numbers, beekeepers and sanitary status of bee colonies should consequently be interpreted with caution, due to the varying data collection approaches and methods used, which limits their reliability and comparability. The adoption of standardized methodologies at the national and global level is recommended for future monitoring purposes in apiculture. In line with this policy, the National Beekeeping Registry (Anagrafe Apistica Nazionale) has recently been established in Italy, and harmonized surveys have been promoted at European level. However, the presently available data are still not homogeneous. Based on official data sources, a general decline of honeybees was recorded in Europe and in Italy during the last decades, achieving an average honeybee colony mortality of 19.0-22.5% in Italy, as a result of a variety of pathological and environmental adverse factors. On the other hand, the distribution of the recently introduced invasive species, Aethina tumida and Vespa velutina, is still confined to some districts, and their impact (i.e. hives destruction in areas infested by A. tumida) and spread are contained by the surveillance measures that the National Veterinary Service is implementing.
