Bidighinzu Lake (N-W Sardinia, Italy) is a warm monomitic and hypereutrophic reservoir. It was built in 1956 and is part of the Long Term Ecological Research-Italy network. Eutrophication represents the main environmental issue for this lake, with relevant consequences for water’s drinking use. The aim of this work was to assess the long-term trophic tendency using data collected from 1988 to 2012. Trends of chlorophyll a (CHL a) and phytoplankton biomass (Bio tot) in the euphotic zone, and of dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature (Tem) and main nutrients (P and N) in the water column were analysed, at multiannual level. Mann-Kendall test revealed a significant increase of Tem, CHL a and Bio tot, and a decrease of nitrate. A reduction of Cyanobacteria and greater contributions of the other phytoplankton’s classes were observed during the years. Despite some attempts of restoration, the obtained data indicate that the lake does not show any significant improvement in its trophic condition.
