78 individual samples of cultivated material (22 local cultivars and 35 ancient trees) and wild olive trees (21) were screened by 13 SSR markers. In total, 137 alleles were detected with a mean number of 4.8 alleles per locus. The observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.03 to 0.99 with an average value of 0.77. The mean of polymorphic information content (PIC) was 0.74. The combination of SSRs patterns allowed the detection of cases of synonymies in the cultivated material. The UPGMA clustering method evidenced the presence of traditionally cultivated material in the ancient olive groves and the same genetic profile with the heritage olive trees. The Bayesian and UPGMA analysis suggested the separation of the wild genotypes, traditional and ancient cultivars into two major gene pools. The Bayesian approach evidenced also an admixture level between the cultivated and wild gene pools, suggesting that some traditional cultivars are the result of plant material exchanges during different historical periods, while some others may have undergone an independent domestication process.
